It is believed that Für Elise was composed in 1810, although there is no definitive proof of this. However, the first known copy of the melody dates from 1867, which was almost 40 years after Beethoven's death. It is possible that the melody was originally composed for another piece altogether, but was never used. It wasn't until after Beethoven's death that the melody was finally published, and it quickly became popular among all music lovers.
